A sock is a garment worn on the feet, usually covering the ankle or part of the lower leg. Some types of shoes or boots are usually worn on socks. In ancient times, socks were made of leather or shaggy animal hair. In the late 16th century, woven socks were first produced. Until 1800, hand knitting and machine weaving were used to produce socks, but after 1800, machine weaving became the main weaving method.

One of the functions of socks is to absorb sweat. The foot is one of the heaviest sweat producers in the human body because it produces more than 0.25 US pints (0.12 L) of sweat per day. Socks help absorb sweat and draw it to areas where the air evaporates. In cold environments, socks made of wool insulate the feet and reduce the risk of frostbite. Socks are worn with sneakers (usually white socks) and formal shoes (usually dark socks). In addition to the many roles socks play in practice, they are also fashion products, and there are a variety of colors and patterns to choose from.
