Matches

A match is a tool for making a fire. Usually, modern matches are made of small sticks or hard paper. One end is coated with a material that can be ignited by the friction heat generated by placing the match on a suitable surface. Wooden matches are packed in matchboxes. Paper matches are cut into several rows and bound into matchboxes. The coated end of the match, known as the match "head", consists of small beads of active ingredients and adhesives. It is usually colored to facilitate inspection. There are two main types of matches: safe matches, which can only be struck on specially prepared surfaces; and ubiquitous matches, which can use any suitable friction surface. Some match like ingredients, called electric matches, are ignited by electricity and do not use the heat generated by friction.
