Chupa Chups

Chupa Chups is a Spanish brand of lollipops and other sweets sold in more than 150 countries around the world. The brand was founded in 1958 by Enric Bernat and owned by Perfetti van melle, an Italian Dutch multinational. The brand name comes from the Spanish verb chupar, meaning "suck.".

In the early 1950s, Enric Bernat worked in an apple sauce factory called granja Asturias. After he came up with the idea of making lollipops, investors left. In 1958, Bernat took over the company and renamed it Chupa Chups. He built production machines and sold a striped candy on a stick, each with a peseta.

Bernat got the idea of a lollipop by making it sticky from melted candy. Bernat didn't think candy was designed for children. Instruct the shopkeeper to keep Chupa Chups within the reach of children, rather than usually near the cash register behind the counter.

Chupa Chups has been successful. Within five years, Bernat's candy was sold in 300000 stores. When candy was first made, lollipops were made of wood, but later they were made of plastic sticks. After the end of French Spain (1939-75), self financing private companies began to go international. In the 1970s, lollipops appeared in Japan and Southeast Asian countries, such as Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia, as well as India and Australia. In the 1980s, it expanded to European and North American markets, and in the 1990s to most Asian countries, including South Korea. In China, they are made by tatagums in Panpan, near Guangzhou. As of 2003, 4 billion lollipops were sold to 150 countries every year. The company has 2000 employees and 90% of its sales come from abroad, with a turnover of 500 million euros.

In 1991, Bernat gave formal control of the company to his son Xavier. Smint sub brand / company was founded in 1994.

In July 2006, the whole company was acquired by Perfetti van melle group in Italy.
