Diving is a sport, usually jumping or falling from a platform or springboard during an acrobatic performance. Diving is an internationally recognized sport and a part of the Olympic Games. In addition, unstructured and non competitive diving is a kind of entertainment.
Diving is one of the most popular Olympic Games. Athletes have many of the same characteristics as gymnasts and dancers, including strength, flexibility, dynamic judgment and air awareness. Some professional divers are initially gymnasts or dancers because both sports have similar characteristics to diving. Dmitri Sautin holds the record for most Olympic diving medals, winning eight between 1992 and 2008.
Although diving has been a popular pastime all over the world since ancient times, the first modern diving competition was held in England in the 1880s. The exact origin of the sport is unclear, although it can be derived from diving at the start of a swimming competition. In his 1904 Book swimming, Ralph Thomas pointed out that records in English can be traced back to at least 1865. John Henry Walsh, in his 1877 edition of British country sports, mentioned that "Mr. Yang" had plummeted 56 feet in 1870, and pointed out that 25 years ago, a swimmer named Drake could cover 53 feet.
The British Amateur Swimming Association (then known as the British Swimming Association) first launched the Diving Championships in 1883. The Diving Championships ended in 1937.
