Rolls Royce is a British car manufacturer, founded in 1973, when the state-owned Rolls Royce limited dissolved the Rolls Royce car business. Vickers acquired the company in 1980 and sold it to Volkswagen in 1998.

Rolls Royce limited, the original Rolls Royce limited, was nationalized in 1971 because of the company's financial collapse, partly due to the development of rb211 jet engines. In 1973, the British government sold Rolls Royce's car business to allow its nationalized parent, Rolls Royce (1971) Limited, to focus on the manufacture of jet engines.

In 1980, Rolls Royce was acquired by Vickers.
