The history of Opel can be traced back to a sewing machine manufacturer founded in 1862 by Adam Orbaugh (Adam Opel). The company began to produce bicycles in 1886 and the first car in 1899.

Opel became a company limited by shares in 1929 (German: Aktiengesellschaft); in the same year, General Motors acquired a majority stake in Opel. General Motors began full control in 1931.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Vauxhall and Opel series were rationalized to a consistent range across Europe.

After GM decided to withdraw its Chevrolet brand from Europe from 2016, Opel withdrew from China in early 2015, where it has 22 dealer networks.
