In 2015, Mazda produced 1.5 million vehicles for global sales, most of which (nearly 1 million) were produced in the company's Japanese factories, with the rest coming from other factories around the world. In 2015, Mazda was the 15th largest car manufacturer in the world.

Mazda's name comes from the production of the company's first three wheeled trucks. Other candidates for model names include sumera go, tenshi go, etc. But when it was decided to name it after the company's president, Mr. Matsuda, those names were left out.
