Abies (Abies) is a genus of 48-56 evergreen conifers in Pinaceae. They are found in most parts of North and Central America, Europe, Asia and North Africa, and in most of the mountains. Fir is most closely related to cedar. Douglas fir is not a true fir, but a pseudotsu.

They are large trees that can reach a height of 10 – 80 m (33 – 262 ft) at maturity and a trunk diameter of 0.5 – 4 m (1 ft 8 in – 13 ft 1 in). Fir can be distinguished from other members of the pine family by its unique attachment of needle like leaves and different cones.
