Axe (sometimes in American English; see spelling differences) is a tool that has been used for thousands of years to shape, split and cut wood, harvest wood, use as a weapon, and use as a symbol of etiquette or heraldry. Axe has many forms and special uses, but it usually consists of an axe with a handle or helmet.

Now they are not so common. They used to be part of the woodworking and carpenter tool kit, not just for forestry. A tool of similar origin is the hook.

Although plastic or fiberglass handles are also common, most modern shafts have steel and wood handles, usually Pecan in the United States, and soot in Europe and Asia. Modern shafts are specialized according to purpose, size and form. A shaft with a handle designed for a short handle of one hand is often referred to as a shaft, but the term "Hand Axe" also refers to a shaft without a handle.
