Hello, with this spelling, it was published in the United States as early as October 18, 1826 on the Norwich messenger in Norwich, Connecticut. Another early use was a book in the United States in 1833, entitled "sketches and quirks of Colonel David Crockett of Western Tennessee", which was reprinted in the London Journal of literature in the same year.

The word was widely used in literature in the 1860s.
