A fork in tableware or kitchen utensils is a tool consisting of a handle having a plurality of sharp teeth at one end. Usually, the food is lifted to the mouth with a metal vessel or fixed in a proper position when cutting with a knife. Food can be lifted by placing a food spear on a prong or by holding it on top of a usually slightly curved prong.
The early history of the fork is obscure. As archaeological evidence has shown, it is generally believed to have originated as a kitchen and dining utensil in the Roman Empire. The personal fork is most likely originated in the Eastern Roman (or Byzantine) Empire. Its use spread to the present middle east in the first millennium BC, and then to southern Europe in the second. It didn't become common in northern Europe until the 18th century and in North America until the 19th century.
Forks are mainly western cutlery, while chopsticks are more popular in East Asia. Today, across East Asia, there are more and more forks.
