A webcam is a kind of camera that can transfer its image to a computer in real time or to a computer network through a computer. When "captured" by your computer, you can save, view, or send video streams to other networks through a system such as the Internet, and send them as attachments via email. When sent to a remote location, the video stream can be saved, viewed, or sent to that location. Unlike IP cameras (connected via Ethernet or Wi Fi), webcams are usually connected via USB or similar cables, or built into computer hardware (such as laptops).

The term "webcam" (clipped compound) can also be used in its original sense, i.e. the camera is continuously connected to the network for an unlimited period of time, rather than for a specific session, usually providing a view through the Internet for anyone visiting its web page. Some of them, such as those used as online traffic cameras, are expensive, rugged professional cameras.
