It is the sixth letter of modern English letters and ISO Basic Latin letters.
In the English writing system? Used to represent sound / F /, i.e. fricative sound without sound. It usually doubles at the end of the word. Exceptionally, it means voiced ground / V / in the common word "of".
The Phoenician form of the letter is used in Greek as the vowel upsilon (similar to its descendant "Y", but also the ancestor of the Roman letters "U", "V" and "W"; the other form is the consonant Digamma, which represents the pronunciation / w / in Phoenician. Although the Latin "F" has different pronunciation, it is still derived from Digamma, which is very similar in form.
After the sound change eliminated the Greek / w /, Digamma was used only as a number. However, the Greek alphabet also causes other letters, some of which are reserved letters derived from Digamma. In the Etruscan alphabet, "F" may be expressed as / w /, as in Greek, while the Etruscans formed the digraph "FH" to represent / F /. (when borrowing these letters, no Greek letter stands for / F /: Greek letter Phi '? "Is it a silent double lip sound / P? /, although in modern Greek it stands for / F /.) When Romans used letters, they used "V" not only in vowels / U / and corresponding semivowels / w / (raised from Greece), but also in / F /. Thus, among the various variants of the Mediterranean world, the letter F enters the Roman letter, which is attached to a sound not found in its Greek and Etruscan precedents. Roman letters form the basis of the letters used in English and many other languages today.
