Walt Disney Company, usually called Walt Disney or Disney for short (/? d? Zni /), [3] is a diversified transnational mass media and entertainment group in the United States, headquartered in Walt Disney film studio in Burbank, California. In terms of revenue, it is the world's largest independent media group, ahead of nbcuniversal and Warner media owned by Comcast and at & T, respectively.
The company was founded by Walt and Roy Disney Brothers on October 16, 1923, then called Disney Brothers cartoon studio, and operated in the name of Walt Disney studio and Walt Disney Productions, then officially renamed Walt Disney Company in 1986. The company grew into a leader in the animation industry in the United States before growing into live action film production, television and theme parks.
Since the 1980s, Disney has created and acquired corporate divisions to sell more mature content than its flagship store brands. The company is known for its Walt Disney studio, which is now one of the largest and most well-known studios in American cinemas. Disney's other major divisions are Disneyland, experience and consumer products, Disney media network, and Disney's direct consumer and international reach. Disney also owns and operates ABC Radio Networks; cable networks such as Disney Channel, ESPN, a & E networks and freeform; publishing, merchandising, music and theater departments; and owns and authorizes Walt Disney World and resorts, a collection of 14 theme parks in the world.
Since 1991, the company has been part of the Dow Jones industrial average. Mickey Mouse, a cartoon created in 1928, is Disney's signature mascot and logo and one of the world's most famous characters.
On December 14, 2017, Disney announced an agreement to merge with 21st Century Fox for $52 billion. After at & T completed its acquisition of Time Warner (now Warner media), the offer later increased to $71 billion in June 2018. The new consolidated entity will retain the name of the original company, which means Walt Disney will retain the name of the consolidated company.
