Chevrolet (commonly known as Chevrolet, the Chevrolet division of General Motors) is the U.S. automotive division of U.S. manufacturer General Motors (GM). Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant, the ousted founder of general motors, founded Chevrolet on November 3, 1911. Durant used Chevrolet Motor car company to acquire the controlling right of general motors. On May 2, 1918, Durant merged reversely and pushed himself back to the rotating presidency of general motors. After Durant's second recall in 1919, Alfred Sloan chose the Chevrolet brand to become the sales leader of the General Motors family, selling mainstream cars and Henry Ford's models with the motto of "cars for every purpose and purpose" T competed in 1919 and surpassed Ford as the best-selling car in the United States by 1929.
Chevrolet cars are sold in most of the world's car markets, except Oceania, where General Motors is represented by its Australian subsidiary Holden. In 2005, Chevrolet was put on the market again in Europe, mainly selling cars with the slogan "Daewoo has grown into a Chevrolet" produced by General Motors Daewoo company of South Korea, which originated from GM's attempt to build a global brand around Chevrolet. With the reintroduction of Chevrolet into Europe, GM hopes that Chevrolet will become the mainstream value brand, while GM's traditional European standard bearing, Opel in Germany and Vauxhall in Britain will be pushed to the high-end market. However, GM reversed the move in late 2013, announcing that the brand would withdraw from Europe, with the exception of Camaro and Corvette in 2016. Chevrolet will continue to be sold in CIS countries, including Russia. After General Motors fully acquired GM Daewoo in 2011 to create GM Korea, the last use of the Daewoo brand ceased in its home country, Korea, and was replaced by Chevrolet.
In North America, Chevrolet produces and sells a wide range of vehicles, from small cars to medium-sized commercial trucks. Because Chevrolet is one of GM's global brands, it is sometimes used as a synonym for general motors or its products. One example is the GM LS1 engine, commonly known as the name or a variant of its ancestral Chevrolet small engine.
