Draft (British English) or checkers (American English) is a group of strategic board games for two players, involving the diagonal uniform game of pieces and forced capture by skipping the opponent's pieces. The draft was developed from arquel. The name derives from the verb to draw or move.
The most popular form is British draught, also known as American checkers, played on a board of eight to eight. Russia's draught, also with 8:8 competition, international draught, with 10:10 competition. There are many other variants on the 8-8 board. Canadian checkers and Singapore / Malaysia Checkers (also known locally as DUM) play in 12-12 innings.
Canadian computer scientist Jonathan Schaeffer's team weakly solved the 8 to 8 variants of the draft in 2007. Starting from the standard starting position, both players can guarantee a perfect draw.
The draft is conducted by two opponents on both sides of the game board. One player has dark pieces; the other has bright pieces. Players alternate. Players are not allowed to move opponents' pieces. Moving includes moving one block diagonally to an adjacent unoccupied square. If the adjacent square contains the opponent's piece and the square next to it is empty, you can capture (and remove) it from the game by skipping it.
Use only the dark squares of the chessboard. A piece can only be moved diagonally into an empty square. In most formal rules, capture is mandatory, although some rule variations make capture optional at render time. In almost all variants, players who have no remaining pieces or cannot move because they are blocked lose the game.
