Giraffe (giraffe) is one of the hoofed mammals, the highest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant in Africa. At present, the genus is composed of a species, Giraffa camelopardalis. The other seven species known from the fossil are extinct prehistoric. According to the study of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA and the morphological measurement of giraffe, the taxonomic classification of one to eight existing giraffe species has been described, but IUCN currently only recognizes one species with nine subspecies.
The main distinguishing feature of giraffe is its extremely long neck and legs, its horny bone and unique coat pattern. It is classified as the giraffidae family and its closest relative, the hoga API. It ranges from Chad in the north to South Africa in the south, Niger in the west to Somalia in the East. Giraffes usually live in grasslands and woodlands. Their food source is the leaves, fruits and flowers of woody plants (mainly Acacia species), which browse at a height that most other herbivores cannot reach. They may be hunted by lions, leopards, spotted hyenas and African wild dogs. Giraffes live in herds of related females and their offspring, or in herds of unmarried men of unrelated adult males, but they are gregarious and may gather together. Men establish social hierarchy through necking, which is a battle using the neck as a weapon. The male mate with the female, and the female bears the sole responsibility for raising the young.
Giraffes attract a variety of ancient and modern cultures because of their unique appearance, and often appear in paintings, books and cartoon works. IUCN classified it as a highly endangered species, and it has been extinct from many parts of its previous range. Giraffes are still found in many national parks and wildlife reserves, but estimates as of 2016 show that there are about 97500 giraffes in the wild, of which about 1144 are in captivity.
