The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional basketball league for men in North America, which consists of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada). It is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada, and is widely regarded as the world's leading men's professional basketball league.

The League was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, formerly known as the American Basketball Association (BAA). After merging with the competing national basketball league (NBL), it was renamed the National Basketball Association on August 3, 1949. NBA regular season from October to April, each team has 82 games. The playoffs run into June. According to the average annual salary of each player, NBA players are the highest paid players in the world.

NBA is an active member of the American Basketball Association (usab), which is also recognized as the national basketball authority by FIBA. Several of the league's international and personal team offices are based in midtown Manhattan, while its NBA entertainment and NBA television studios are located in secox, New Jersey.

The American Basketball Association was founded in 1946 by major ice hockey arena owners in the northeast and Midwest of the United States and Canada. On November 1, 1946, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Toronto Eskimo team held the New York nikbock game in maple leaf garden, which is now called the first game in NBA history. The first basket was made by Ossie schectman of nickbock. Despite previous attempts at professional basketball leagues, including the American Basketball League and NBL, baa is the first league to compete mainly in large arenas in major cities. At its inception, the quality of the BAA's game was no better than that of competitive leagues or leading independent clubs such as Harlem Globetrotters. For example, the 1948 ABL finalist Baltimore bullets moved to baa and won the league's 1948 title, while the 1948 NBL champion Minneapolis Lakers won the BAA's 1949 title. However, before the 1948-49 season, the NBL teams from Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Minneapolis and Rochester jumped into baa, which established baa and became the preferred League for college students who want to become professionals.

On August 3, 1949, the remaining NBL teams - Syracuse, Anderson, tri cities, Sheboygan, Denver and Waterloo - merged into baa. In order to merge and avoid possible legal troubles, the name of the league has been changed to the current National Basketball Association of the United States, although the merged League retains the management organization of baa, including Maurice podoloff as chairman. To this day, the NBA claims that baa's history is its own. Now, it believes that the NBL team's arrival is just an expansion, not a merger, and that NBL records and statistics are not recognized.

The new alliance has 17 franchises in large and small cities, large gymnasiums, small gymnasiums and armories. In 1950, the NBA merged into 11 franchises, a process that lasted until 1953 – 54, when the League reached the smallest eight franchises: New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia warriors, Minneapolis Lakers, Rochester royals, Fort Wayne pistons, three city Blackhawks and Syracuse These people are still in the league. The shrinking process makes the franchise rights of small cities transferred to large cities. The eagles moved from three cities to Milwaukee in 1951 and then to St. Louis in 1955. The Royal Rochester team moved to Cincinnati from Rochester, New York, and moved to Detroit from Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1957 from the pistons.

Wataru Misaka broke the NBA's color barrier when he played for the New York Knicks in 1947-48. Before the first African American, Harold hunter, signed with the Washington Capitol in 1950, he was still the only non white player in the league's history. During the training camp, hunter was removed from the team, but several African American players did join the League later that year, including chuck Cooper of Celtic, Nathaniel "SWAT water" of Knicks and the Earl Lloyd of the Capitol in Washington. During this period, the Minneapolis Lakers, led by center George Mikan, won five NBA titles and became the first dynasty of the league. To encourage shooting and prevent stalling, the League introduced a 24 second shooting clock in 1954. If a team does not attempt to score a goal (or the ball does not touch the basket) within 24 seconds of receiving the ball, the game stops and the ball is passed to the opponent.

In 1969, Alan Siegel supervised the design of the major league baseball logo of Jerry Dior a year ago, which was inspired by MLB and created the modern NBA logo. It incorporates the silhouette of legendary Jerry West filmed by Wen Roberts, although NBA officials deny that specific players are their influence, because Siegel said: "they want to institutionalize it rather than personalize it. It became ubiquitous. , the classic symbol and focus of their identity and their authorization plan, they don't have to identify it with a player. " The iconic logo made its debut in 1971 (the font of NBA lettering changed slightly in 2017) and will continue to be a fixture of the NBA brand.

ABA successfully signed a number of key stars in the 1970s, including Julius Erving of Virginia squires, in part because it allows teams to sign up with undergraduates. In the meantime, the NBA has grown rapidly, one of its aims being to connect with the most viable cities. From 1966 to 1974, the NBA grew from nine franchises to 18. In 1970, Portland Trailblazers, Cleveland Cavaliers and buffalo Warriors (now Los Angeles Clippers) all made their debut, expanding the League to 17. Sir New Orleans (now in Utah) joined the league in 1974, bringing the total to 18. After the 1976 season, the League reached a settlement to increase four ABA franchises to the NBA, increasing the number of franchise rights to 22 teams including San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers and New York nets (now Brooklyn nets). Some of the biggest stars of this era are Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Rick Barry, Dave cowens, Julius Erving, Elvin Hayes, Walt Frazier, Moses Malone, artis Gilmore, George Gervin, Dan Issel and Pete Maravich. However, at the end of this century, the decline in television ratings, low attendance and drug-related player problems, both perceptual and real, could derail the league.
