Assault rifles are selective shooting rifles that use intermediate bullets and detachable magazines. Assault rifles were first used during World War II. Although the concept of assault rifles is very slow in western countries, by the end of the 20th century, they had become the standard weapons for most of the world's armed forces, replacing the all-around rifles and submachinegun in most cases. The term assault rifle is usually attributed to Adolf Hitler, who, for propaganda purposes, used the German word "sturmgewehr" (translated as "storm rifle" or "assault rifle") as a new name for mp43, later sturmgewehr 44 or StG44. Other sources, however, questioned Hitler's role in creating new names in addition to signing production orders. STG 44 is generally regarded as the first selective shooting military rifle to popularize the concept of assault rifle. Today, the term assault rifle is used to define a gun with the same basic characteristics as STG 44.
