Hands

The hand is a powerful multi fingered organ at the end of the forearm or forelimb of primates such as humans, chimpanzees, monkeys and lemurs. Other vertebrates, such as koala (each "hand" has two opposite thumbs, and the fingerprints are very similar to human fingerprints), are often described as "hands" rather than claws on the forelimbs. Raccoons are often described as having "hands," but lack a resistant thumb.

Fingers contain the most dense area of nerve endings in the body and are the most abundant source of tactile feedback. They also have the maximum positioning ability of the human body; therefore, the touch sense is closely related to the hand. Like other pairs of organs (eyes, feet, legs), each hand is mainly controlled by the opposite hemisphere of the brain, so the preferred choice of hand for one hand activities (such as pencil writing) reflects the brain function of the individual.

Some evolutionary anatomists use the term "hand" more widely to refer to finger appendages on forelimbs, for example, if the three digit number of a bird's hand is the same as the loss of two digit homology in a dinosaur's hand.
