Pine cone

Cone (official use in Botany: bulbous, plural bulbous) is an organ containing reproductive structure in a plant, such as conifer. The familiar wood cone is the female cone, which produces seeds. The male cones that produce pollen are usually herbaceous, and are less pronounced even at full maturity. The name "cone" derives from the fact that some species have shapes similar to geometric cones. The plates of a cone are called scales.

In all conifers, the male cones (microneedles or pollen cones) are similar in structure, but the differences between different species are very small (mainly in size distribution). The microspore leaves (modified leaves) protrude from the central axis. Under each microsporangium is one or several microsporocysts (anthers).

The female cone (megacone, seed cone or egg cone) contains the ovule, which becomes the seed when fertilized by pollen. Among different conifers, the female cone structure changes more obviously, and it is usually very important to identify many conifers.
