Bitcoin is a global cryptocurrency and digital payment system, known as the first decentralized digital currency, because the system can work without a central repository or a single administrator. It was invented by unknown programmers or a group of programmers in the name of Satoshi Nakamoto and released as open source software in 2009. The system is peer-to-peer, and transactions are conducted directly between users without intermediary. These transactions are validated by network nodes and recorded in a public distributed ledger called blockchain.
In addition to being created as a reward for mining, bitcoin can also be converted into other currencies, products and services. As of February 2015, more than 100000 merchants and suppliers have accepted bitcoin as payment. Bitcoin can also be held as an investment. According to research conducted by Cambridge University in 2017, between 290 and 5.8 million unique users are using cryptocurrency wallets, most of them using bitcoin. On August 1, 2017, bitcoin was divided into two derivative digital currencies, the classic bitcoin (BTC) and the bitcoin cash (BCH).
