Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is an action adventure video game series created by David Jones and Mike dailly; later names were created by Dan and Sam Houser brothers, Leslie benzies and Aaron garbu brothers. It was mainly developed by Rockstar North (formerly DMA design), a British development company, and released by its parent company, Rockstar Games. The name of the series refers to the term "stolen car", which is used for car theft in the United States.

Most of the Games in the series are played in fictional language environments modeled on cities, usually Freetown, sin city or San Andreas, the New York City, Miami and California avatars. The first game covers three fictional cities, while subsequent games tend to emphasize a single setting. The key point of the game is that in the open world, players can choose tasks to develop the whole story and participate in side activities, including action adventure, driving, third person shooting, carjacking, occasional role playing, stealth and racing elements. The series focuses on many different protagonists who are trying to move up through the criminal underworld, although their motivations vary. The series also features elements of the beat'em up game of the early 16 bit era. The adversary is usually the character who betrays the protagonist or his organization, or has the greatest impact on the protagonist's progress. Senior figures in film and music have expressed their views, including ray Liotta, Dennis Hopper, Samuel L. Jackson, James Woods, Debbie Harry, Axl Rose and Peter Fonda.

DMA design launched the series in 1997 and released the original Grand Theft Auto. As of 2019, the series has 11 independent games and 4 expansion packs. The third title in chronological order, Grand Theft Auto III, is considered a landmark title because it brings the series to a 3D setting and a more immersive experience. The subsequent title follows and builds on the concept established in Grand Theft Auto III and has been widely acclaimed. They influenced other open world action games and led to the cloning of Grand Theft Auto tags in similar games.

The series is highly acclaimed and commercially successful, with 280 million units sold, making it the fourth highest selling video game series ever, after Nintendo's Mario and Pok é mon series and Tetris. In 2006, Grand Theft Auto became one of the British design icons in the British design mission organized by the BBC and the design museum. In 2013, the telegraph listed Grand Theft Auto as one of Britain's most successful exports. The series is also controversial for its adult sexual and violent themes.
