GoPro, Inc. (marketed by GoPro, sometimes styled GoPro) is an American technology company founded by Nick Woodman in 2002. It produces motion cameras of the same name and develops its own mobile applications and video editing software. Founded in the name of Woodman labs, Inc., the company eventually focused on Internet sports, developing its sports camera and later video editing software.

The company launched the four rotor UAV karma in October 2016. In January 2018, karma stopped production and the company hired JPMorgan Chase to seek an option to sell the company. A month later, however, the chief executive denied the claim. GoPro continues to be engaged in the manufacturing of motion cameras.

The company was founded in 2002 by Nick Woodman. He was inspired by his surfing trip to Australia in 2002, when he wanted to capture high-quality action photos, but it wasn't because amateur photographers couldn't get enough distance or buy high-quality equipment at a reasonable price. Woodman and his surfing friends are eager to become professional surfers, so they have the name "GoPro", because "pursuing professional" is the ultimate goal and the only way to shoot on water at that time. The camera series is branded "hero" because they aim to capture close-up action shots that make the subject look like a hero.

Woodman raised some of the initial money by selling beads and shell belts from Volkswagen vans and later Fashion Camera belts for less than $20. He also received more than $230000 in investment funds from his parents.

In 2004, the company sold its first camera system using 35mm film. Later, digital cameras and cameras were introduced. Since 2014, a fixed lens HD camera with a 170 degree wide-angle lens has been provided; two or more can be paired to create 360 video.

On June 4, 2014, the company announced the appointment of Tony Bates, a former Microsoft executive, as president, reporting directly to Woodman.

In January 2016, GoPro cooperated with periscope to broadcast live.

After adding more than 500 employees in 2015, the company responded to weak sales in the fourth quarter, shedding about 7% (100 workers) in January 2016.

In November 2016, the company announced that it would cut 200 jobs to reduce costs. The company also announced that its president, Tony Bates, would resign at the end of 2016. In March 2017, the company laid off 270 employees, and in January 2018, another 250 employees, making the total number of employees "less than 1000".

At its peak, GoPro's share price was $86, but on March 26, 2018, it was just $4.81.

Woodman started using his first camera two years after he founded the company, and finally launched the GoPro 35mm hero at the action sports retailer trade show in San Diego in September 2004. GoPro sold $150000 worth of products in its first year. In 2006, the company launched its first digital hero with 10 second video function, generating $800000 in revenue. In the second year, GoPro sales tripled to $3.4 million.

In 2014, the company sold different color versions of hero3 +. It can shoot at a 16:9 aspect ratio and supports 4K UHD video and 12 MP still photos. Hero4 was launched on September 24, 2014.

On September 28, 2017, GoPro released the Hero 6 camera, which claims to be more stable than the hero 5 model and capable of capturing 4K video at 60 FPS.

GoPro announced on July 11, 2018 that more than 30 million hero cameras have been sold since its inception.

As of October 2014, GoPro sold three fixed lens cameras, two of which had no viewfinder and the other included a touch screen viewfinder. The 2-bit LCD on the front of the camera allows access to its menu system, which is controlled by the front and top shutter buttons. The size of hero4 black is 41 mm? 59 mm 30 mm, weight 88 g (152 g with shell). Still images of 6 to 12 megapixels can be captured. The camera features a transparent polycarbonate HD housing with glass lenses, rated for seismic and water resistance up to 131 feet (40 m), a quick release buckle at the top and a screw thread at the bottom that can be attached to all GoPro bases. The housing has a metal button connected to the camera control, and has a "skeleton" back door option that allows audio recording when the camera is used with the base without water or shock resistance.
