George Walker Bush (born on July 6, 1946) is an American statesman and the 43rd president of the United States from 2001 to 2009. He was also the 46th governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000. After graduating from Yale in 1968, he worked at Harvard Business School in 1975, where he worked in the oil industry. Bush, who married Laura Welch in 1977, soon lost the race for the house of Representatives. Before beating Ann Richards in the 1994 Texas governor's election, he later shared the Texas Rangers baseball team with others. After a close and controversial defeat of Democratic rival Al Gore, Bush became the fourth President-elect in 2000, but won fewer popular votes than his rivals.

He is the eldest son of a famous political family, Barbara and George H. W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, making him the second president in the highest office in the United States after his father, John Quincy Adams. His brother, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, is a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2016 presidential election. His grandfather, Prescott bush, was an American senator from Connecticut.

The terrorist attacks on September 11 took place eight months after Bush's first term as president. Bush responded with the so-called "Bush Doctrine": launched the "war on terror", an international military campaign, including the war in Afghanistan in 2001 and the war in Iraq in 2003. He also promoted economic, health care, education policy, social security reform and constitutional changes to ban same-sex marriage. He signed broad tax cuts, the Patriot Act, the No Child Left Behind Act, the partial abortion ban, Medicare prescription drug benefits for the elderly, and funding for the AIDS Relief Program, known as PEPFAR. His term includes national debates on immigration, social security, electronic surveillance and torture.

In the 2004 presidential campaign, Bush defeated Democratic Senator John Kerry in a relatively close election. After re-election, Bush has been criticized by more and more politicians for dealing with the war in Iraq, Hurricane Katrina and other challenges. In this criticism, the Democratic Party regained control of Congress in the 2006 election. In December 2007, the United States entered the longest recession since the Second World War, usually known as the "Great Recession", which prompted the Bush administration to obtain various economic plans adopted by Congress to safeguard the country's financial system. Throughout the country, Bush is one of the most popular and unpopular presidents in history. After the attacks on September 11, President Bush received the highest presidential support rate on record, and one of the lowest during the 2008 financial crisis.

Bush left his office in 2009 and returned to Texas to buy a home in Dallas. In 2010, he published his memoir decision points. His presidential library opened in 2013. In historian polls published in the late 2000's and late 2010's, he was ranked worst for the presidency.
