Sir KBE Chaplin (April 16, 1889 to December 25, 1977) is a British comic actor, film producer and composer, who became famous in the era of silent film. Chaplin is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. From his Victorian childhood to the year before his death in 1977, his career lasted for 75 years, including ad fans and controversies.
Chaplin's childhood in London was one of poverty and hardship. Because of his father's absence and his mother's financial difficulties, he was sent to a workshop twice before he was nine years old. When he was 14, his mother was sent to a mental hospital. Chaplin started acting as a child, visited the concert hall, and later became a stage actor and comedian. At the age of 19, he signed with the famous Fred Karno company, which brought him to the United States. Chaplin has been involved in the film industry, and began to appear in Keystone studios in 1914. He quickly developed the role of tramp and built a huge fan base. Chaplin has directed his films since his early days, and continued to hone his skills after joining Essanay, mutual and first national. By 1918, he had become one of the most famous people in the world.
In 1919, Chaplin and others co founded the distribution company United Artists, which gave him full control of the film. His first feature film is the kid (1921), followed by a woman of Paris (1923), the gold rush (1925) and the circus (1928). He refused to turn to audio movies in the 1930s, but instead produced lights of the city (1931) and modern (1936) without dialogue. Chaplin became more and more political, and his next film, the great dictator (1940), satirized Adolf Hitler. The 1940s was Chaplin's controversial decade, and his popularity declined rapidly. He was charged with Communist compassion, and his involvement in paternity testing and marriage to many young women sparked scandals. The FBI launched an investigation and Chaplin was forced to leave the United States and settle in Switzerland. He gave up tramps in later films, including Mr. Verdoux (1947), limelight (1952), the king of New York (1957) and the Countess of Hong Kong (1967).
Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, edited, acted and created music for most of his films. He is a perfectionist whose financial independence allows him to spend years developing and producing photographs. His films are characterized by the combination of farce and sadness, and the struggle between vagabonds and adversity. Many contain social and political themes as well as autobiographical elements. Chaplin once again praised his work in 1972 and won the Academy of honors Award for "his invaluable role in the art form that will cost film production in the century". He continues to be highly valued, with the gold rush, the lights of the city, modern and dictator often on the list of the greatest films of all time.
