E-is the fifth letter and the second vowel of modern English letters and ISO Basic Latin letters. It is the most commonly used letter in many languages, including Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Latin, Latvian, Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish.

The Latin "e" is different from its source. The Greek "epsilon" is ". In turn, this comes from the Semitic letter H?, which has been suggested initially as a prayer or a call for human form (hilllul's "joy"), and may be based on similar Egyptian hieroglyphs, indicating different sounds.

"E" is the most common (or most frequent) letter in the English alphabet (starting with the printer's phrase etaoin shrdlu) and several other European languages, which have an impact on encryption and data compression. In Edgar Allan Poe's story "the gold bug," a character finds random character codes by remembering that the most commonly used letter in English is e. This makes it a popular letter that is difficult to use when writing a pen chart. Ernest Vincent Wright's Gadsby (1939) is regarded as a "terrible" novel. It is said that "at least part of Wright's narrative problem is due to the language restriction caused by the lack of E" The English versions of George Perec's novel La division (1969) and Gilbert Adair both omit 'e' and are considered better works.
